It took me years to decide how to design this drawing. Because of the realism that I hope to achieve in my work, I normally draw from various reference photographs. With its focus on the kraken and the pirate ship, this drawing forced me to work less from photos and more from my own imagination. I chose this title because, after years as a ‘starving artist,’ I would joke about what life would be like “when my ship comes in.” Over the years, I’ve realized that if we are too busy waiting for our ships to come in, we can forget that most of life’s enjoyment and satisfaction comes from our experiences before our ships arrive.
