You may have some romantic notions when you think about the days of the pirates. I have a feeling that there was nothing romantic about pirates. In this drawing my idea was that a group of pirates would be following a treasure map to find the buried treasure. Little do they realize that they grabbed the wrong map. After hours of digging, the only thing they find is the dog’s stash of bones. Whereas the dog had the right idea and knew where to dig.
I had a lot of fun playing with different layers of reality in this piece. I am in the process of drawing an image of a treasure map as if it were a still life with the rocks holding the map from curling. While I take a break, the pirates row their boat to my drawing and start digging for their treasure. Unbeknownst to the pirates, they are about to lose one of their companions.
