My idea of creating a drawing of wild horses has been running around in my head (no pun intended) for over five years. My original idea changed many times before I decided on this design. I wanted to celebrate the freedom of wild horses, and decided that having them simply run out of the drawing was the clearest way to do that.
I have played with the idea of the subject moving into the drawing and back out again. I felt I was able to accomplish that in this piece by having the herd of horses begin in the hazy background, disappearing down the hill then emerging over the ridge to surge off the drawing.
