In “Cheese, Please,” I am drawing some mice and cheese. A real mouse, thinking that he is missing out on friends and food, comes over to investigate. I created “Cheese Please” after “Self Portrait,” and I wanted to add an element of whimsy to my illusions with the mouse wandering across the artist’s table. I hoped to challenge the viewer to think about what is drawn and what is real. At first glance, many people think there are a number of mice coming to see the cheese that I am drawing. If you look closely at the shadows, it becomes clear that there is only one real mouse.
